TITLE: GAITway to Dance

Description: This workshop consists of the dancers’ training process to become physically fit in a way that educates the body to move efficiently.  It is more than technique; it is the combined elements of joint stability, muscle development, strength, and stretching to ultimately support structural balance and provide Freedom-in-Form. This is not solely a conditioning class, but rather a dance class that incorporates core initiation, breath, alignment, strength, flexibility and choreography.  The workshop will progress over the 3-days and incorporate the process of transforming oneself towards a more educated higher-level dancer.

Day1:   Introduction, Finding your Center & Breath exercises, Alignment, Core access, Organizing the body to begin working efficiently.

Day 2:  Access the ‘now’ efficient body, Joint stability with muscle support, stretching, strength exercises, adapt principles to movement.

Day 3:  Applications of Day 1 & 2, with applications to movement.  


Christine Baltes is a Master Teacher specializing in Jazz dance and holds a certification in Pilates.  She is on the faculty at UCI, Chapman University, CSULB, and recently has been hired to teach Dancer Placement classes at the Segerstrom Center for the American Ballet Theatre.


TITLE: Hip Hop Dance

Teacher:  Zach Groenewold Dates:  April 15 & 26 Time:  3:15 – 5:15


Description: Students will learn the basic principles & history of Hip Hop Dance and how its’ technique differs from other dance genres.  Dancers will also learn a Hip Hop dance combination using the principles taught.  Zach breaks every step down and the focus is not solely on learning choreography but how to execute choreography.  He will emphasize dancing more dynamic utilizing levels, textures, energy, and musicality.


Zach Groenewold is professionally trained in ballet, jazz, and hip hop. He attended the Orange County High School of the Arts in the Commercial Dance Department, where he worked with such choreographers as Dee Caspry, Liz Imperio, and Alexander Magno. Zach danced in a variety of media, including New Line Cinema’s The Wedding Singer, a Power Rangers commercial, and ABC Family presents WESTLIFE: LIVE.


TITLE: Contemporary Jazz & Lyrical Dance

Teacher:  Cyndi Hermann    Dates:  Every Wed. Time:  3:00 – 5:00

Description:  Students will learn contemporary and jazz and lyrical styles of dance, also learning a brief history, make connections to current trends in dance, and perform work from instructor as well as have opportunities to choreograph themselves within these genre. 


Cyndi Hermann has taught high school students for over 20 years. She holds a BA and MA in dance from California State Long Beach, a teaching credential in Physical Education. She is a freelance choreographer for high school dance classes throughout Orange County.




TITLE: Commercial Dance

Eddie Garcia has worked in television, film, music videos, and concerts throughout the world. He has performed on several world tours with Michael Jackson and in videos with Janet Jackson & Jennifer Lopez.  Eddie has also worked with Ja Rule, Sheryl Crow, Jane’s Addiction, Paula Abdul, and Brandy.

Jennifer Backhaus is Founder and Artistic Director of Backhausdance, Orange County’s award-winning contemporary dance company. She was featured in “OC Metro’s” 40 Under 40 in 2009 and honored by Chapman University as Alumni of the Year in 2007 for her artistic leadership of Backhausdance. Jenny holds a BFA in Communications and Dance from Chapman University, and received her MFA in Choreography from Hollins University
